PROFESSIONAL
I worked as a contractor in Hendry County for about 13 years before going to work for the Hendry County Property Appraiser. I was there for six years before transferring to the newly formed Hendry-LaBelle Recreation Department as Director, Secretary and Chief Financial Officer. I prepare an annual budget, manage personnel and act as general contractor on all new projects and project manager for new parks and facilities built through grant funding thereby remaining knowledgeable in the area of current costs.
While working for the Property Appraiser, I earned the designation of Certified Florida Evaluator and the position of Administrative Assistant, training and supervising field appraisers in residential, commercial and agricultural areas. Part of my job was justifying the tax roll values to the Department of Revenue during periodic studies and preparing the annual sales ratio analysis for the level of assessment. Another important part of my job was meeting and helping the public understand appraisals, taxing authorities, exemptions and the resulting tax bill.
PERSONAL
I was born in Hudson, New Hampshire, and served in the United States Navy from 1969-1973. I met and married the former Gail Powell and we have two children. Son, Michael and his wife, Amanda, and grandson, Nicholas (2) are living in Kentucky. Daughter, Kerensa and her husband, David Clark, and granddaughter, Tayler (5) are here in LaBelle. I was honored to be the 2008 Swamp Cabbage Festival Parade Grand Marshal; voted 1996 Citizen of the Year by the Greater LaBelle Chamber of Commerce; received the TV20 Good Neighbor Award; a season was dedicated to my wife and I by the LaBelle Little League; and a wall and several shelves house the various awards and thank you’s received over the years. I was also credited with saving the lives of a family of four attacked by yellow jackets in the woods a few years ago as described in Readers Digest. I feel I am helping God to help others and that God has called upon me to do these things.
Whether through my job or on my own time, I am active with local and state government agencies as well as civic and non-profit organizations including but not limited to all the sports organizations, Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, NASGRASS and GRASSCAR lawn mower racing, 4-H Club, LaBelle Youth Athletic Association, LaBelle Family Livestock Club, Fishers of Men Fishing Tournaments, Bull Pit Ministries, LaBelle Youth Livestock & Agricultural Exhibition, LaBelle Black Heritage Festival, Pioneer Plantation Homeowners Association, and the Felda community leaders. I have a very hard time saying “No” to anyone.
